Last month I entered two images in to the Rise International Photography Awards. After trying to login several times last night to view my results, I was finally able to view them this morning. So excited to receive a silver and bronze award in the children category! Bex Howarth
These two incredible people got married last August at the gorgeous Stamford Plaza Brisbane - and what an absolutely stunning day it was. I loved all of the beautiful moments, congratulations Kari + James!

I love documenting weddings from start to finish! I get to capture all the moments, from the butterflies whilst getting ready, family seeing the bride in her dress for the first time (in this case the brides dad and grandma, it was beautiful!) walking down the aisle & the groom seeing his bride-to- be for the first time (this always makes me cry!! and then it's hard taking photos through blurry eyes...) the first kiss, sunset photos together as newlyweds, right through to toasts and the first dance. It is such a whirlwind of a day, that moves so quickly. I love that I get to sit down and relive all the moments whilst editing, then handover these 'moments' which will stay with the couple forever. It is such a wonderful feeling.
The sun was fading fast for our equine session in this back paddock on the weekend, so we had to work quick. Couple that with a horse who was winding down for the afternoon looking for his dinner. There is always a bit of chaos in the behind the scenes for a photo shoot. Whether it be an unsettled newborn, an active toddler, a hungry pet. In between all the fun though, at just the right moment, we get the shot. In this instance I got loooooooot's of shots :)
Kasey you should do this full time!
Ooooohhhh another Raw Design Media gallery was viewed by its family! 266 images of gorgeous moments from the families photo shoot, ready to sit on the walls of the family home.

The 4074 and surrounding suburbs, proudly held its second Community Fun Day, last Sunday the 1st of May, thanks again to Lisa Baillie and her hardworking team! Even though the rain was determined to set in & drizzle for the majority of the day, it didn't stop our community from turning up in their wellingtons & rain coats, and support our local, talented & hard working vendors, who raised funds to support two wonderful local organisations, Project: Love & Care and Mount Ommaney Special School. What a turn out! I couldn't be more proud to be part of such a vibrant, warm and engaging neighbourhood, who crowded into the market stalls to check out everything that was on offer. Some of the highlights from the day would have to be Just Poppy's hamburger eating competition... Whoa!? Those burgers were huge!! Even bigger was the crowd that got in nice and close to watch the contestants try & eat their way to be number one! Although it was touch and go, there was one clear winner who took the trophy home. Next up was the Cake bake competition sponsored by Cakes Around Town. The detail and effort that went into these cakes was evident, with everyone lining up to sample a taste, after all the winners had been announced! Lisa Terare and her Remax Innovations crew, put on a great show with toddlers of all ages bopping to their tunes, and Kiwanis Club Brisbane kept everyone well fed. There really was something for everyone! I am still editing and sorting through the images of the day, but here is a taster below of some of the highlights!
Proud to be a local 4074'er
This is the most asked question I hear from my clients in our pre-consultation stages so I thought I would share with you my top 10 tips for what to wear on a Photo shoot.
First and foremost you want to feel comfortable on your shoot and what you chose to wear on the day will have a direct impact on that.
Styling a family; As a general rule I tell my clients to select a total of 3-4 colours max and to stay away from bold patterns as they can detract from both the scenery and the main focus of the shot, YOU.
Have a look at the colour wheel below for some colour HARMONY
With that being said however, if one person was to wear a colourful print in say a shirt or a dress you could select two other colours from the said print and style your families wardrobe around it. Here are a few examples;
Wear your Sunday best. What does this mean I hear you ask? Wear something that is a bit dressier than what you would ordinarily wear, with out being to formal. Light cotton dresses for girls and button up shirts for boys is a sure fire win.
Keep your location in mind. If you are going to be having a photo shoot outdoors than most likely I will have you sitting or lying down at some stage. Make sure your outfit will allow for this.
Plan all the way down to your shoes. Yes that's right. Put as much thought into your footwear as you would your outfit. Do they need cleaning? Are they comfortable? Do they make you feel amazing?
At the risk of completely confusing and losing you...
Don't dress too matchy matchy. Yep I know you all know what I mean! You would have seen pictures floating around the web (or have them hanging on your walls at home from when you were little) of those rigid family Portraits where the whole family is wearing denim pants and a white top, or all the girls are wearing identical dresses matching their mum!! I sure have & cringe every time. Stay clear of matching everyone's outfit.
Make up & hair. I love nothing more than to see everyone look as natural as possible when turning up for their photo shoot, it's a timeless classic look that always looks fresh. For the ladies and girls, keep your hair out & flowing and to the boys use as little of product as possible. Make up always accentuateswomen's features and make us feel that little extra special but don't go overboard. Mascara, light covering of foundation/powder & some lippy will do the trick. It's a fine balance, you don't want to look too made up for a park portrait but you also don't want to look washed out. A bit of colour on the apples of your cheeks & some tinted lip gloss or lipstick ought to do the trick.
Don't wear clothes that wrinkle easily or have stains. Photoshop is an amazing tool that allows us to do so many things, from changing the colour of the sky, removing blemishes on the face or even removing an entire person as they wander past our frame during a shoot. It can not however, iron the wrinkles out of your shirt & you'd be amazed at how much they come up on print.
Let teenagers chose their outfit, they feel self conscious at the best of times so letting them select their own outfit will give them a certain amount of control with the shoot and be more inclined to turn up ready to participate.
I have been asked on many occasion whether parents should ask younger family members to remove accessories for a Photo shoot. I personally don't mind if a child/teenager wants to wear their favourite "loom" band or bracelet/watch/jewellery I find it is those small details which both you and your children will look back on in years to come as the "remember that bracelet in this photo? I used to looove it" stage. After all that's what we want to achieve in our sessions, capturing a moment in time to look back on in years to come. If your teenagers or partner need a little guidance when getting ready refer them to these steps;
- Wear something comfortable that you love and feel fabulous in
- Wear your Sunday best
- Stick to 3-4 colours (If 1 person is wearing a pattern however, stick to 2 colours from the said pattern)
- Allow teenagers to select their own outfits (after they have read our guidelines that is :o)
- Keep your location in mind
- Don't forget your shoes!
- Don't be too matchy matchy
- Don't wear clothes that wrinkle easily or have stains
- Keep it natural with make up & hair
- Wear your best smile, you're going to have fun!

Strength reveals itself through character - Henry Rollins
I love these two.
I love hanging out with a new family and meeting the littlest family members. Always a little standoffish to begin with, not sure about me and my big camera. I love the challenge of getting them to be comfortable enough to be themselves in front of the camera, then capturing them having an absolute ball. Family portraits should be fun, silly, exciting and above all memorable.

We are one year old today!!!! Thank you for all your support!
One year ago we held our breath and laid our hearts on the line launching Raw Design Photography. We weren't sure if people would get what we do and how we do it but we couldn't have been more wrong. It seems you are all a little crazy like us and love to live in bold, rich, courageous colour, then in tender moments reflect a little in black and white for a deep sense of mood. We love it and you! Thanks for following our journey and checking in with us from time to time. We would love to meet you all in person and share your moments up here too. Drop us a line to inquire about our Package and A la carte price list today.
I can't get enough of this family!
The past few months here have been jam packed with some exciting new developments. New equipment, new ideas, exciting new training and doing what we love most, meeting new people and capturing your special moments.
One of the progressions we are most excited about, is expanding our services as Fine Art Portrait Photographers, to now offer Wedding Photography! We are completely over joyed about this decision and can't wait to be involved in all the love and romance of your special day.
I was lucky enough to visit my sister (1 of 3) in Adelaide on the weekend, and spend some time with her on her b'day. What an amazing woman she is. Courageous, loving, kind, fierce, sharp, funny, wise and independent (to name a few) she is incredible. True to me... I managed to squeeze in a photo shoot :O)

What an absolutely gorgeous winters day in Brisbane, for a wedding. Raw Design Photography met up with Dennis from D.Volgelsang Photography to learn what it takes to capture a wedding in its entirety. You couldn't find a more relaxed bride & Groom and crew to capture. I love the excitement and buzz on a wedding day and even though I didn't know the bride & Groom, I still had the lump in my throat while the two were taking their vows. What a beautiful day.
